I just got back into the game last after being away since jr. high. (I'm in college now btw). After watching some youtube videos I power farmed from level 14 to 76 and took use of the eater multi - summon to get some more units. I've read the FAQ about building a squad but honestly, I still don't know what to do. I have quite a few units now who I think are good but I have enough for the need to prioritize crystals for leveling up. My current level also makes it a hindrance because I can't slot 5 of the 7 stars yet.
    Here are my units:
    • Emperor Slayer Regil (Maxed out with Ultra Unlocked)(WTF is that karma and gold cost to Omni-Evolve?!?!?!?!)
    • Sacred Dragonchild Lara
    • Holy Thunder Eze
    • Tranquil Moon Rouche
    • Dark Blade Lico
    • Bolt Mallet Elulu
    • Scythe Alice
    • Lion Demon Viktor
    • Judgment Demon Zalvard
    • Battle Fanatic Zeek
    • Azure Queen Iris
    • Azure King Garrel
    • Armored Flame Valen
    • Shadow Ronin Mifune
    • Noble Links Johan
    • Noble Cavalier Krantz
Which five should I aim for in my squad? Mode doesn't really matter to me. Arena, Questing, haven't really done anything else..., etc.

For higher level players, effectively they don't have any karma and gold concerns. The numbers might as well not exist for them. Now, of course...for lower level players, the costs will be a pain in the ass for the short run. But eventually it's not an issue. Run Monday karma dungeon, Flying Dragon Dance in Fal Nerga/Ishgria, and so on, there are ways to farm currency.

In terms of squad, there's a difference between what you can do now at 7* and what becomes possible when you can run full Omni units.

GENERAL PURPOSE SQUAD - QUEST/RAID/TRIAL/GGC (7* TEMP VERSION)
    :light:Regil (Lead) + :light:Krantz, :light:Lara, :dark:Johan, :dark:Zalvard
    - for the time being you need to rely on Krantz for status ailment cleanse, you don't really have any alternative options. That locks the Krantz slot.
    - Johan's included for BB fill when squad is damaged, Lara for other heal/support that Krantz doesn't carry, Zalvard for crit and so on.

GENERAL PURPOSE SQUAD (FULL OMNI VERSION OF SQUAD)
    :light:Regil (Lead) + :dark:Alice, :light:Lara, :dark:Johan, :dark:Zalvard
    :light:Regil (Lead) + :fire:Valen, :light:Lara, :dark:Zalvard, (choice of last unit - Viktor/Zeek/Iris/Alice/etc)
    - in these setups, you can use Alice or Valen for your status ailment cleanse (they'd need SP options at Omni to do this)
    - Alice and Valen do def buff that stacks with Lara's def relative to rec. Alice BB is needed for def/rec buff at Omni.
    - Zalvard is still included for crit and UBB (his UBB is a very good safety net for squad in harder content)
    - Either Valen or Johan do the squad mitigator (dmg reduction) role, SP them for two turn duration on their buff at Omni. Valen/Johan also do the BB fill when squad is damaged role (Valen needs some SP for that as well)
    - Lara has an SP option for mitigation but don't take that on her, let Valen/Johan handle it (her buff is shorter duration).

    OTHER BUILDS
    - you don't really have the stuff to do a highly specialised FH build, so just use your regular squad.
    - for arena, maybe look at :thunder:Viktor or :light:Krantz as your squad leader
